Prince (English: It's Showtime!; Hindi: प्रिंस) is a 2010 Bollywood film directed by Kookie V Gulati, produced by Kumar S Taurani and starring Vivek Oberoi, Aruna Shields, Nandana Sen and Neeru Bajwa in pivotal roles.[1] The film was originally titled as Prince of Thieves and then Prince It's Showtime, the latter of which is still sometimes used to refer to the film. This film is the directorial debut of Kookie V Gulati. The music of the film is composed by Sachin Gupta, with the lyrics penned by Sameer. The film was released on 9 April 2010.[2] The film was one of the most highly-anticipated films of the year after My Name Is Khan due to its highly rated music, excellent promotion and a series of box office failures like Sadiyaan, Hum Tum Aur Ghost and other films which did not manage to run decently at the theaters for even a week. The story is inspired from the Hollywood film Hardwired.
Upon release, Prince opened reasonably well but crashed badly in the second week and was declared a flop at the box office.[3] The film clashed at the box office with several other films, including Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai, as well as the Indian release of two major Hollywood films, The Hurt Locker and Clash of the Titans, and also faced competition from the Indian Premier League. The film was praised for its stunning graphics, highly stylish presentation and realistic acting of Vivek Oberoi, which was praised by almost all the critics.

Revenue
India
Prince released in India to high expectations from most people.[4] In its opening weekend, the film netted about INR 110 million (Rs. 11 crores). The film did well in many places, and dominated at places primarily having single screens. Overall, the performance of the film at the single screens (70–75%) was far better than its performance in the multiplexes (50–60%) – a trend followed by other major releases of 2010 except My Name Is Khan. The film performed much better at the box office than Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai, the latter earning only INR 22.5 million in its first weekend.[5] At the end of the first week, the film earned INR 151.3 million, with the first weekend contributing over 70% of the revenue.
Prince dropped nearly 80% in its second week and was declared a flop by the box office India.[6]
Overseas
Overseas, Prince has performed not so well at foreign countries such as the US, UK and Australia. In comparison to overseas blockbusters such as My Name Is Khan and 3 Idiots, Prince performed poorly, and is unlikely to gross much money from overseas markets.[7] It got limited screening in USA and UK and was declared a flop.
Prince opened in the US in 54 screens, and fetched US$ 89,047 in its opening weekend and debuted at #36 at the US box office. The two overseas blockbusters, My Name Is Khan and 3 Idiots, opened to around US$ 2,000,000 and ended their runs at approximately US $4,000,000[8] and US $6,000,000[9] respectively.
Prince debuted in the UK in 45 theaters.
Reception
Critical reception
The film received both negative and positive reviews from critics. Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama rated the movie 3 out of 5 saying "Prince has all merits to strike a chord with the youth", praising Vivek Oberoi's 'bravura' performance, the film's 'Hollywood style' look and action sequences, as well as the music. Noyon Jyoti Parasara of AOL India gave 3 out of 5 to the film saying, "once you are willing to let go off your beliefs and logic – like you really can’t jump off a cliff on your bike and remain unscratched – you would like the film."[10]
Ankit Ojha from Planet Bollywood rated the movie 8 stars out of 10, stating that the movie, "has the global appeal of a slick action-thriller flick, and yet entices the Bollywood audience with its paisa-vasool experience". He gave a thumbs-up to Vivek Oberoi's performance, stating that, "Prince has literally put Vivek Oberoi on a completely new level. Never at once does he look uncomfortable doing any scene; he looks completely at ease throughout this. Whether it’s the stunts, the intimate scenes or the cool attitude, he doesn’t play the character here; he literally ‘is’ the character." He praised the movie and found it technically stoid, having a good screenplay by writer Shiraz Ahmed and an equally "gripping" execution by director Kookie Gulati.[11]
On the other hand, Omar Qureshi of Zoom rated the movie 2.5 out of 5 saying, "The film is over the top and unrealistic." Indiatimes.com rated the movie 2 out of 5 stars saying, "The film has taken the audience for granted, which shows us gadgets hard to believe and futuristic and that such futuristic shows should be limited to Hollywood.". Subhash K. Jha gave the film 2 out of 5 stars, and said, "Prince wears its super-cool shirt with the slogan ‘Come Watch Me’ with a little bit too much aggression. But if you love popcorn crunching adventure stories watch Vivek Oberoi play the hero from the hemisphere of hijinks." He praised Oberoi's acting and the action sequences, saying that "To his credit Oberoi carries off the ceaseless stint with the stunt with arresting aplomb[...]The expertly-executed stunts frequently see our hero jumping down high-rise buildings in breathtaking leaps of fate, with the camera pulling back in respectful awe."[12]
According to Channel V, the film wears a bad look, has little good locations, but is 'nil' on the acting quotient. In their opinion, none of the heroines delivered performances worth even a mention. On the other hand, they did say that Vivek Oberoi delivered a good performance. They also said that the action is beyond belief and is unreal.
Box office
The film performed reasonably well during the first week upon its release, however its business fell by around 80% in the second week, largely attributed to its huge price tag.[13] The film was declared a flop by the box office India.[3]
Soundtrack
The soundtracks of Prince is composed by Sachin Gupta and background score (film score) by Sandeep Shirodkar. The lyrics are penned by famed lyricist Sameer. The soundtrack comprises six original tracks, one instrumental and nine different types of remixes by DJ Suketu featuring Aks. The album became a favorite among the people, and was declared a "chartbuster". The songs Oh Mere Khuda, Tere Liye and Kaun Hoon Main were most popular in the soundtrack, Tere Liye being the most popular out of the three.
Tere Liye appears in as many as four versions in the soundtrack, the last of which (the unplugged version) is sung by the composer (Sachin Gupta) himself.
Ankit Ojha of Planet Bollywood, stated in his music review, that "this album is destined to remain on the charts for a very long time, just like Tips’ last musical hit Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani did." He rated the music 8 stars out of 10.[14]
